On Friday, August 25, 2017, the first major hurricane to make landfall in the United States since Wilma in 2005, Hurricane Harvey, made landfall near Rockport, Texas, at peak intensity.

Harvey has caused at least seven confirmed fatalities in the United States. Catastrophic inland flooding is ongoing in the Greater Houston area. FEMA director Brock Long called Harvey "the worst disaster" in Texas' history, and expected the recovery to take "many years." The need for water, sanitation, hygiene, food and housing support has only just begun for the Texas gulf coast.

The Mass Care Task Force Fund

The Mass Care Task Force (MCTF) is a collaboration between the American Red Cross North Texas Region, the Salvation Army DFW Metroplex Command, the North Texas Food Bank, and VolunteerNow. The collaborative effort was established in 2006 in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to maximize the disaster-related services provided by the four nonprofit agencies.
